Monzon Napoles - 6
6. Monzon TKO
Very fun fight, can imagine this today and people calling Monzon out for fighting a midget but Napoles starts very well landing lots of quality shots and even pusging monzon back but ultimately Monzons, too big, too good a chin and too hard a puncher. Napoles has a chin as well though, he toom some hard leather and didnt go down, took Dundee to pull him out in the end.
Duran DeJesus 2
1. DeJesus 10-8
7. Duran 10-8
11. Duran KO
Great display from Duran. Must have felt like dejavu getting dropped cold in round one again but if anything the first loss seems to sput Duran on who goes up a gear and bashes Dejesus up as the foght goes on.
2. Holmes 10-8
13. Holmes TKO
Brilliant fight, Cooney looks great at points but Holmes hust has that extra bit in his araenal that he can pull out when under pressure. Holmes experience really shines here as he turns the fight in his favour.
3. Mayorga 10-8
8. Trinidad KO
Bit of a beatdown by Trinidad really but Mayorga gives it ago and is his usual entertaining self.
Turpin Robinson 2
Footage wasnt complete so didnt score. From fight 1 I noticed Ray started a lot faster and Randy isnt as aggreasive. Not sure if thats due to the adaptions Ray has made but he nearly scores a KD in round 2 and itbtakes until the mid rounds befoes Turpin is able to impose himself in the fight.
Randy comes on as the fight goes late but Ray is sharper this time and when hes landing hes doing damage, Randys hurt and he didnt seem to get buzzed in fight 1.
Round 10 and Robinson drops him heavy with a huge right, Randy never recovers and takes a pounding. Seen this called a quick stoppage before but Randy was taking a vicious beating and I think they got it spot on.
This series was deserving of a rubber match.
11. Chavez TKO
Rosario is a quality foghter and gives his all here but what can you do with a guy who throws conatabtly, has an iron chin and is technically great. One of Chavez finest displays.
Tyson v Berbick/Spinks
2. Tyson KO
1. Tyson KO
Peak Tyson = one scary mother...
Im sure the story goes that monster puncher Baer didnt take Braddock seriously, pissed about and then realised too late he couldnt KO Braddock who'd piled up all the points.
Baer certainly looked like he was taking the piss tbh. Showboating, feining being hurt, gesturing the crowd but he lost every round and pretty clearly. Walking around with a guard so low Roy Jones wouodnhave been embarrassed. Braddock just uses the jab, pops the right over the top and pops the odd body shot, all the way to victory, hes not even landing with much pop or at any great speed either. Looks a bit like a friendly sparring session.
I reckon theres a good chance this was actually fixed.
9-6 Marcel, not the best footage but enough to score it though some close rounds may swing if the footage was clearer. Great fight though, absolute war at times. Marcel is such a skillful fighter but I thought Arguello had him through those mid rounds only for him to get a burst of energy and put a bit of a beating on Arguello over the final rounds.
Bowe v Holyfield 1
11. Bowe 10-8
One of my fav fights, absolute animals these two, can box, can punch, can brawl, get it all and its supremely clise till round nine then Bowe starts to run away. Round ten when Holy is all over but ends the round on top is prob my fav ever round.
Burns v Martinez
1. Martinez 10-8
Burns greatest night and it started terribly with that awful KD. He fought through it and dominated for the most part, brilliant performance.
8. Yaegashi (crazy round)
10. Yaegashi TKO
Crazy fight with two absolute warriors, utter war but Yaegashi has a bit more than Porpamook and it almost felt like he was always gonna end uo the victor. Chins though, its bombs away here.
Quality fight that saw the crowning of the first ever Japanese middleweight world champion. Both guys going toe to toe throughout but Takehara had a bit more pop and used his size advantage well at times. Was a deserved winner but had it pretty close.
Ali Liston 2
1. Ali KO
Lots of talknof corruption, phantom punches etc for thisnone but HD shows the punch land clean. Walcott fucked up his count and the timekeeper counted Liston out. No fix imo, why wouod they keep fighting after if so. This is why you dont have celebrity referees desoite their legacy in the sport.
3. Even (both men down)
6. Siki KO
Interesting fight and the well known story of the fix gone wrong, its a pretty good fight if the fix was in as they both go for it and share a bunch of KDs. They state the punch that Carpentier threw that cause Siki to lose it was in the KO round but Im pretty sure its in the fifth after Siki picks him up and then gets sucker punched, Siki is raging and chases him across the ring. The KO, Siki just puts a battering on hima nd Caroentier wants no more, takes the ten counts on the floor staring up at the ref.
3. Leonard 10-8
14. Leonard TKO
Great fight between to ATGs. Leonard dominates early but then Benitez finds a way back in, very evasive and a great counterpuncher makes it very difficult for Leonard despite it looking like it maybe one sided early. Leonard could just adapt to anything though and give Leonard even a glimpse of a weakness and youll end up on the floor a beaten man.
5. Patterson KO
Moore came into this a favourite after his Marciano performance but Patterson looked amazing here, beautiful movement, punch selection, looked so good on his feet, wonderfully executed left for the first Kd, Moore never recovered. Patterson was such a talent at 21.
Palomino Muniz 2
Utter war and brilliant fight but Palominontakes over the second half, love watching Palomino, need to watch more of Muniz.
Reminds me I need to watch Muniz v Napoles which is meant to be one of the worst robberies ever. I also need to watch the first of this foght which sounds just as great.
3. Dempsey KO
1. Huge size advantage for Willard but it doesnt matter much cant he cant utilise it, Dempsey has beeter feet, is faster and just swarms him, big left drops him but its already the beginning if the end as hes bounced upa nd down like a yo-yo for the rest of the round. Todays standards and it stopped on the third KD, back then hes dropped seven times and then they get confused whether the the fight is over or if its the end of the round. Dempseys gone and has to come back for round 2.
2. Willards already dead in the water, the second roundnis just prolonging a beating for him yet he does better here than round 1 mainlybas he grapples for hisnlife and Dempsey cant get his punches off.
3. Willard cant even clinch now, hes trying but Dempsey is just beating him up, claret everywhere, face and body and allmover Dempsey as well. Willard retires at the end of the round having had his teeth knocked out, broken bones and lost pints of blood.
Gotta give Willard some props cause he looks near dead but still tries to fight back, had to retire after that beating but was a hard dude for sure.
1. Chavez 10-8
5. Chavez TKO
Haugen talked shit tonthe wring guy this time but he did talk his way to the buggest attended fight of all time (minus sideshows to Russian superbike contests). Chavez put a beating on here ans won a 100k of Don King for stopping Haugen as a bonus. Haugen knew he was int trouble from round 1 when he was dropped at the starting bell. Tough guy but you cant be a punchbag for Chavez and last the distance.
Floyd v Gatti
1. Floyd 10-8
6. Floyd TKO
More of a performance really than a great fight, possibly Floyds finest hour in terms of looking amazing, absolute domination and a very aggressive display. Floyd was much better to watch in this era.
Forgot about sucker punches. Wasnt really Floyds fault though but theres always something in a Floyd fight that creates some sort of controversy.
3. Gonzalez 10-8
Great display from Gonzalez and a brave effort from Viloria but hes outgunned here is what is probably Chocalatitos greatest performance.
Griffith Benvenuti 1
2. Benvenuti 10-8
4. Griffith 10-8
Got this tight (though no way Griffith can win it) but missing rounds in footage dont help, dunno if they exist but im gonna try and seek them out to see if I can get an actual result for myself. Great fight though, both guys can box and styles mix well, early KDs each set the fight up. Minus the missing rounds felt Benvenuti probably did enough to edge it, just looked likenat times Grifftith struggled with Benvenuti being tall and awkward and resorted to over reaching and being caught.
6. Estrada 10-7
7. Estrada 10-7
9. Estrada 10-8
10. Estrada TKO
Thisnis fun till round six and even after Marquez is game as hell but the prolonged beat down is probably a reason why he was a shot fighter by 25.
Clay Liston 1
7. Clay TKO (via Liston not answering the bell)
Bad match up for Liston, I feel like stylewise Ali is probably the worst you could get for him. Better with his feet, faster with his hands, taller, rangier, throws hard combinations. Alis head movement to avoid Listons jab is superb in this fight.
Ali lights Liston up in the first few rounds, long combos, uses his jab to keep Liston at bay and Sonny resorts to wild swings which are easily evaded, completely takes it away.
Funnily enough Liston would eat Jones and Cooper alive but those two being a bit smaller and faster gave them a better chance at Ali and they were able to cause him problems in the two previous figjts to this.
Good fight for showing the difference in heart at this point in their careers. Ali cant see and aive no doubt Listons team did put something on the gloves but he works his way through and weathers Listons storm (with some help from his corner). When Liston has to overcome obstacles he claims his shoulder is injured and pulls out. Theres a million conspiracies over these fights though.
Robinson doesnt make it out for 14. Heat reallyndid do Robinson in here, Gokdstein gets carried out the ring after ten and a replacement ref comes in. Robinson outboxes Maxim in every round, even in the 13th when he had nothing left I though he edged it.
That said gotta give Maxim credit, amazing stamina, knew not to overdo it and Robinson having to work hard against a foghter 15lb heavier just combibed nicely so he was still fresher later on in the heat.
Boy do I need a Schmidts of Philadelphia after that. One beautiful beer. Verybgood fight, had Giardello edging it 8-7 but theres lots of close rounds that could swing, certainly no robbery but Carter could get the nod too. Enjoyed that, think Giardellos experience, especially leter in the fight gave him enough to come through. Judges scores look poor though, way too wide.
Gatti Ward 1
4. 9-9 (due to Gatti Pt deduction)
9. Ward 10-8
Not much more can be said about thisnfight that hasnt already been said. Amazing fight in which eounds 5, 9, 10 win round of the year most years. Round 9 might be the best round of all time.
Still though, though Gatti won this one. Round 4s a big one because if you give it to Ward its a 2 point swing.
Amazing fight though. Will always stand up.
10. Duran TKO
Great fight, looks a pretty poor stoppage thougg. The footage is pretty bad so maybes im not picking up on what the ref can see but looks like he can continue to me. Grateful for the footage of this but wish someonenwould take the time to spruce it up, such a great fight but its not the easiest watch.
Marquez Pacman 4
3. Marquez 10-8
5. Pacman 10-8
6. Marquez TKO
Not much to be said about this that hasnt been send, wonderful war to end the greatest rivalry of the millenium era. Brutal KO.
Woah, what the fuck just happened there.
